Culturing Live Food at Home
Live food produces better colour, stronger breeding, and healthier fry than any flake or pellet — and once a culture is running, it costs next to nothing to keep going. Here's how ECAAC members culture vinegar eels, microworms, daphnia, mosquito larvae and bloodworms at home, cheaply and reliably.
Why Culture Your Own
Commercial frozen and freeze-dried foods are convenient, but nothing beats the response fish have to live, moving prey. Live foods trigger natural hunting behaviour, are usually higher in moisture and unprocessed protein, and — critically for breeders — are often the only food small enough for newly hatched fry to eat in their first days of life.
The bigger win, though, is cost. A single microworm or vinegar eel starter culture, obtained once from a fellow club member or a small online order, can be split, fed from, and kept going indefinitely for the price of a bit of oats, yeast, or fruit peel — items most households already have. Compare that to a steady stream of imported frozen food purchases, and a five-minute-a-week culture routine pays for itself within weeks.
Live food culturing also plugs neatly into the club's Breeding Awards Program — many species that are difficult to spawn or raise in South Africa become dramatically easier once a keeper has a reliable rotation of appropriately sized live foods on hand for every growth stage, from egg-yolk-sized fry to full-grown breeding stock.

The Cultures
Vinegar Eels
Turbatrix acetiA microscopic, harmless nematode worm that lives in unpasteurised vinegar. Once established, a vinegar eel culture is essentially indestructible and can run for years without a full restart — ideal as the very first live food for tiny egg-laying fish fry too small for microworms.
What You Need
- A 1–2 litre glass jar or bottle with a loose-fitting lid
- Raw, unpasteurised apple cider vinegar (with "the mother")
- A slice of raw apple or a teaspoon of sugar
- A starter culture (from a club member or online seller)
- A coffee filter, cotton wool, or fine filter floss for harvesting
Harvesting
- Layer cotton wool or filter floss loosely inside the jar neck
- Eels migrate upward through the filter toward oxygen
- Rinse the filter under a fine sieve into clean water and dose directly into the fry tank
Step by Step
- Fill the jar two-thirds full with raw apple cider vinegar diluted 50/50 with dechlorinated water.
- Add the apple slice or a pinch of sugar as a food source for the culture.
- Add the starter culture and cover loosely — the culture needs some airflow, not an airtight seal.
- Store at room temperature out of direct sunlight; avoid moving or disturbing it.
- Leave undisturbed for 2–3 weeks until the liquid looks faintly cloudy with fine, wriggling threads.
- Top up with diluted vinegar every few weeks and add a fresh apple slice monthly to keep the culture fed.
Microworms
Panagrellus redivivusA slightly larger nematode than the vinegar eel, cultured in a simple porridge-like paste. Microworms climb the container walls, making harvest easy, and are one of the most forgiving, beginner-friendly live foods in the entire hobby.
What You Need
- A shallow plastic container with a loose-fitting or vented lid
- Instant oats, mashed potato flakes, or plain porridge
- A pinch of active dry baker's yeast
- A starter culture (from a club member or online seller)
- Dechlorinated water to mix the paste
Harvesting
- Worms climb the inside walls of the container above the paste line
- Wipe them off with a clean finger or soft brush into tank water
- Alternatively, run a moistened cotton bud along the wall and swirl it in the tank
Step by Step
- Mix oats or potato flakes with water to a thick, porridge-like paste, about 2cm deep in the container.
- Sprinkle a small pinch of yeast over the surface to kick-start fermentation.
- Add the starter culture on top of the paste and cover loosely to allow airflow.
- Keep at room temperature (22–26°C); worms will appear climbing the walls within 5–7 days.
- Harvest daily once established; the culture will keep producing for weeks.
- Start a fresh tub with a spoonful of the old paste every 3–4 weeks before the old one turns sour.
Daphnia
Daphnia pulex / magnaA freshwater "water flea" that doubles as both excellent fish food and a living water clarifier, since it filter-feeds on green water and suspended particles. A well-run outdoor daphnia culture in South Africa's warmer months can produce huge, low-cost harvests with almost no daily input.
What You Need
- A large plastic tub, old fish tank, or outdoor container (10–40L)
- Dechlorinated water, ideally aged or rainwater
- Green water, spirulina powder, or baker's yeast as a food source
- A starter culture (from a club member, pond, or online seller)
- A fine net or turkey baster for harvesting
Harvesting
- Scoop with a fine net, taking care to leave younger daphnia and food source behind
- Rinse briefly in clean water before feeding to remove culture debris
- Harvest little and often rather than emptying the whole culture at once
Step by Step
- Fill the container with dechlorinated water and let it sit a few days to develop a light green tinge (green water) or add a pinch of spirulina powder.
- Add the daphnia starter culture and place somewhere with bright, indirect light — outdoors in shade works well in warmer months.
- Feed sparingly every 2–3 days with a pinch of yeast or a dash of green water — overfeeding fouls the culture faster than underfeeding.
- Watch for a population boom within 2–4 weeks as the culture establishes.
- Harvest regularly once established to prevent overcrowding, which can crash the colony.
- Top up water lost to evaporation and re-green the water as needed to keep feeding the colony.
Baby Brine Shrimp
Artemia salina (freshly hatched nauplii)Not a true "culture" but a same-day hatch — dormant brine shrimp cysts hatch into swimming, nutrient-rich nauplii within a day, making this the single most popular fry-rearing food in the hobby worldwide. Freshly hatched nauplii still carry their yolk sac, giving fry an exceptional nutritional boost right when they need it most.
What You Need
- A dedicated hatchery cone, inverted 2L bottle, or any small container with an airline
- Brine shrimp eggs (cysts) — widely sold at SA aquarium shops
- Non-iodised aquarium or marine salt, mixed to roughly 25–35 ppt
- An air pump and airline to keep cysts in constant suspension
- A small light source — cysts hatch faster and more reliably under light
- A fine brine shrimp net or coffee filter for harvesting
Harvesting & Rinsing
- Turn off the air and light 10–15 minutes before harvest — hatched nauplii swim toward light, making them easy to siphon off
- Empty shells float; live nauplii collect lower in the water — separate carefully
- Always rinse nauplii in fresh water through a fine net before feeding to freshwater fry, to avoid dosing saltwater into the tank
Step by Step
- Mix non-iodised salt into dechlorinated water at roughly 25–35 ppt (about 30g salt per litre) inside the hatchery.
- Add brine shrimp cysts — a level teaspoon is plenty for a small hatchery batch.
- Keep the mixture constantly aerated from below so cysts never settle, and position a light nearby.
- Maintain water temperature around 25–28°C for the fastest, most reliable hatch rate.
- Check after 18 hours; most batches are fully hatched by 24–36 hours, visible as a cloud of tiny orange swimmers.
- Harvest, rinse thoroughly in fresh water, and feed the same day — nauplii lose most of their nutritional value within 24 hours of hatching.
- Start a new batch every 1–2 days to keep a constant supply going for actively growing fry.
Mosquito Larvae
Culicidae spp.Free, abundant, and a favourite of surface-feeding fish and killifish species, mosquito larvae ("wrigglers") are one of the easiest live foods to produce in South Africa's warm summer months — with the added community benefit of reducing local mosquito numbers.
What You Need
- An open bucket or tub of standing dechlorinated water
- A handful of dry leaves or grass clippings (to attract egg-laying females)
- A fine net or turkey baster for harvesting
- A secure mesh cover once larvae are established (to stop escapees)
Harvesting
- Net out wriggling larvae daily once visible near the surface
- Rinse briefly before feeding
- Harvest before larvae pupate and mature into adult mosquitoes
Step by Step
- Fill a bucket with dechlorinated water and leave it uncovered outdoors, away from direct household use areas.
- Add a few dry leaves to encourage bacterial growth females use as an egg-laying cue.
- Wait for female mosquitoes to lay egg rafts on the surface — usually within a few warm evenings.
- Larvae hatch and begin wriggling near the surface within 1–2 days.
- Harvest daily with a net once larvae reach a usable size, well before they pupate (5–10 days from hatching).
- Cover the bucket with mesh fine enough to stop adult mosquitoes escaping into the neighbourhood once you're done harvesting for the season.
Bloodworms
Chironomus spp. (midge larvae)True bloodworms are the aquatic larvae of non-biting midges, not mosquitoes, and are genuinely difficult to culture indoors at hobby scale — most South African hobbyists source them by seasonal collection from clean, still water, or trade harvested batches with other club members rather than running a dedicated home culture.
What You Need
- A fine-mesh dip net or sieve
- Access to clean, unpolluted still or slow-moving water (dam edges, rain barrels, unused ponds)
- A shallow tray or bucket to sort and rinse the catch
- A fridge-safe container for short-term live storage
Storing What You Collect
- Rinse thoroughly to remove mud and debris before storage
- Keep in a shallow layer of cold, clean water in the fridge (4–8°C)
- Change the water daily; larvae will stay usable for 1–2 weeks stored this way
- Freeze any surplus in an ice-cube tray with a little water for longer-term storage
Collecting Responsibly
- Identify a clean, still or slow-moving body of water known to be free of pesticide or agricultural run-off.
- Sieve the top layer of soft mud or leaf debris at the water's edge — bloodworms are the thin, red, wriggling larvae visible against the sediment.
- Collect only what you'll use within a week or two to avoid waste and unnecessary environmental disturbance.
- Rinse the catch thoroughly through a fine net under clean running water before feeding or storing.
- Consider organising a club collection outing — pooling effort with other ECAAC members makes this far more efficient than going it alone.
- Never collect from water you're unsure about; bloodworms readily absorb pollutants from contaminated sediment.

Vinegar Eels Aren't Really Eels
Despite the name, vinegar eels are microscopic roundworms (nematodes), not true eels at all — the name simply describes their eel-like swimming motion under a microscope.
Daphnia Clone Themselves
In good conditions, daphnia reproduce asexually, with females producing genetically identical clones — a strategy that lets a healthy culture population explode extremely quickly.
Bloodworms Owe Their Colour to Iron
True bloodworms get their vivid red colour from haemoglobin in their blood, the same oxygen-carrying pigment found in humans — a rare trait among invertebrates.
Only Female Mosquitoes Bite
Male mosquitoes feed entirely on nectar; harvesting larvae before they mature to biting adult females is both good husbandry and a small public health courtesy to your neighbours.
Microworms Never Fully "Die Out"
A microworm culture can crash from neglect, but as long as a spoonful of live paste survives, it can restart an entirely new tub — a genuinely renewable food source for the cost of oats.
Live Food Triggers Spawning
Many breeders report that switching adult fish onto a sustained live food diet in the weeks before pairing is one of the most reliable natural triggers for conditioning fish to spawn.
