The Key Water Parameters

What to Test and What the Numbers Mean
Critical

Ammonia (NH₃)

Ideal: 0 ppm always

Produced by fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying matter. Toxic to fish even at very low levels — 0.25 ppm is already stressful, and 2 ppm can be lethal within hours. The nitrogen cycle converts it to nitrite and then nitrate. Any reading above zero in a stocked tank requires immediate action.

Any ammonia reading > 0 ppm: do a 30–50% water change immediately
Critical

Nitrite (NO₂)

Ideal: 0 ppm always

The middle step in the nitrogen cycle. Produced by bacteria breaking down ammonia. Interferes with oxygen transport in fish blood — sometimes called "brown blood disease". Less acutely toxic than ammonia but still dangerous above 0.5 ppm and should never be tolerated in a stocked tank.

Any nitrite > 0 ppm: water change and check cycle status
Monitor

Nitrate (NO₃)

Ideal: < 20 ppm; tolerable < 40 ppm

The end product of the nitrogen cycle — far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, but accumulates over time and stresses fish at high levels. Elevated nitrate is the primary driver of algae growth and long-term health decline. Controlled through regular partial water changes.

Readings consistently > 40 ppm: increase water change frequency
Species-Dependent

pH

General community: 6.8–7.5 | Cichlids: 7.5–8.5 | Softwater fish: 5.5–7.0

The measure of how acidic or alkaline your water is, on a scale of 1–14. Most community fish tolerate a pH of 6.5–7.5 well. More important than hitting a precise number is stability — a fish adapted to pH 7.5 is far healthier than one experiencing daily swings between 6.8 and 7.8.

Species-Dependent

GH — General Hardness

Soft: 1–6 dGH | Medium: 7–14 dGH | Hard: 15+ dGH

Measures dissolved calcium and magnesium. Affects fish osmoregulation and plant nutrition. Softwater species (tetras, discus, dwarf cichlids) prefer low GH; livebearers and African cichlids prefer high GH. SA municipal water varies widely — Gqeberha tends toward moderately hard, while Johannesburg water is much softer.

Stability

KH — Carbonate Hardness

Planted tanks: 3–6 dKH | General: 4–8 dKH

Carbonate hardness is the pH buffer — it resists pH swings. A tank with very low KH (below 3 dKH) is at risk of a "pH crash" overnight as CO2 builds up and the water turns acidic while fish sleep. CO2-injected planted tanks need carefully managed KH to balance pH stability with plant CO2 availability.

Tropical: 24–27°C | Coldwater: 16–20°C

Often overlooked as a "water parameter" but critical for fish health, disease resistance, and the efficiency of the nitrogen cycle. Stability matters as much as the number itself — fluctuations of more than 2°C in a short period stress fish and trigger Ich outbreaks. In South Africa, summer ambient temperatures can overheat tanks without a chiller.

SA Critical

Chlorine / Chloramine

Ideal: 0 — must be removed before adding fish

South African municipalities use chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) to disinfect tap water, not plain chlorine. Unlike plain chlorine which dissipates if water is left to stand, chloramine does not evaporate. It must be chemically neutralised with a dechlorinator specifically designed to break the chloramine bond. See the full section below.

Phosphate (PO₄)

Ideal: < 0.5 ppm (planted: 0.1–1.0 ppm)

Primary driver of algae growth in aquariums, especially green spot algae and green water. Enters the tank through overfeeding, tap water (varies by SA region), and decomposing matter. Planted tanks need some phosphate for healthy plant growth, but excess consistently triggers algae outbreaks. Test your tap water if algae is a recurring problem despite good maintenance.

Chloramine — The SA Tap Water Issue

Why "Just Let It Stand" Doesn't Work

What is Chloramine and Why Does It Matter?

Most South African municipalities — including Gqeberha/Nelson Mandela Bay, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban — treat tap water with chloramine (a compound of chlorine and ammonia) rather than plain chlorine. This is done because chloramine is more stable and provides longer-lasting disinfection through the distribution network.

For aquarists, this creates two problems: first, chloramine does not evaporate if you leave water to stand (unlike plain chlorine, which will off-gas over 24 hours). Second, when chloramine breaks down in aquarium water, it releases free ammonia — which is toxic to fish and can spike an established tank. Failing to properly dechlorinate is one of the most common causes of mysterious fish deaths after a water change.

The solution: Use a dechlorinator that specifically neutralises chloramine and detoxifies ammonia. Not all products do both — read the label carefully.

Recommended

Seachem Prime

The gold standard dechlorinator — neutralises chlorine, chloramine, and temporarily detoxifies ammonia and nitrite. Highly concentrated (dose: 5ml per 200L). Widely available from SA aquarium suppliers. The first product to reach for.

Good Alternative

API Stress Coat

Removes chlorine and chloramine, adds aloe vera to help slime coat repair. Available at most SA pet stores. Slightly less concentrated than Prime but effective and widely stocked.

Check the Label

Budget Store Dechlorinators

Many cheaper SA pet store dechlorinators are sodium thiosulphate-based — these neutralise free chlorine but do NOT break the chloramine bond. If the label doesn't specifically say "chloramine", don't use it in areas with chloramine-treated water.

Planted Tanks

Dose per Top-Up, Not Just Water Changes

Don't forget to dechlorinate any top-up water added to replace evaporation, not just scheduled water changes — even small additions of untreated tap water add chloramine to the tank.

South African Regional Water

What Comes Out of Your Tap Depends on Where You Live

South African municipal water quality varies significantly from city to city — and sometimes between different areas within the same city, depending on source dams and local treatment. This table gives typical ranges based on published municipality water quality reports; actual values shift seasonally, so always test your own tap water rather than assuming these figures.

Gqeberha/Nelson Mandela Bay water is typically moderate in hardness and pH, making it suitable for most community fish straight from the tap after dechlorination. Members in other regions may need to adjust accordingly.

Test your own water with a liquid test kit before setting up a new tank. Water quality can also change temporarily during maintenance work on local infrastructure.

Adjusting pH & Hardness

When Your Tap Water Doesn't Match Your Stock

Lowering pH and Softening (for softwater fish)

For species like discus, cardinal tetras, apistogramma, and killifish that need soft, acidic water:

  • RO water: Reverse osmosis removes nearly all dissolved minerals. Blend with tap water to hit your target GH/KH, then adjust pH. The most reliable method for softwater species.
  • Indian almond leaves / driftwood: Release tannins that naturally acidify water and stain it amber — authentic for blackwater biotopes.
  • Peat filtering: Running water through peat softens and acidifies it gradually.
  • Avoid: pH-Down products (phosphoric or hydrochloric acid) — they provide unstable, short-lived pH changes and can stress fish.

Raising pH and Hardening (for African cichlids, livebearers)

For species like Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids, mollies, and livebearers that need hard, alkaline water:

  • Crushed coral / coral sand: Releases calcium carbonate slowly, raising both KH and GH, and buffering pH upward. Add to the filter or use as substrate.
  • Aragonite sand: Similar to crushed coral; aesthetically authentic for Malawi/Tanganyika setups.
  • Rift Lake Salt mixes: Proprietary products (e.g., Seachem Malawi/Tanganyika buffers) replicate rift lake chemistry precisely.
  • Limestone rock: Naturally raises pH and KH in direct contact with water.

Stability Over Precision

For most community tanks, chasing an exact pH number creates more problems than it solves. Fish that are adapted to your local water and then kept in stable conditions at that pH are usually healthier than fish kept in water that's been chemically adjusted to hit a "perfect" number but fluctuates as buffers wear off.

  • Test your water weekly while getting to know it — build a picture of its natural variation
  • Choose fish suited to your tap water before buying, rather than adjusting water to match the fish
  • Gradual, stable parameters beat "correct" parameters that swing

RO Water in South Africa

Reverse osmosis units are available from aquarium and hydroponic suppliers in most SA cities. They produce mineral-free water that must be remineralised before use. Essential for discus and cardinal tetra breeding, and useful for softwater biotope tanks.

  • Remineralise with Seachem Replenish, GH Booster, or a RO-specific mineral product to set target GH
  • Buffer KH separately using sodium bicarbonate or a commercial KH product
  • A 50/50 blend of RO and Gqeberha tap water gives approximately 4–6 dGH — ideal for a wide range of community fish

Water Chemistry Facts

pH Swings at Night

In a planted tank, pH drops at night as CO2 from fish respiration builds up (no photosynthesis). The drop can be 0.5–1.0 units. If your KH is very low, this swing can become dangerous. Test in the morning (lowest pH) and evening (highest) to understand your full range.

New Pipe Syndrome

New plumbing and pipes can leach copper into tap water — toxic to invertebrates and plants at very low concentrations. If you've recently had plumbing work, flush the pipes thoroughly before using tap water for your aquarium, and consider testing for copper.

Water Changes Don't Lower pH

A common misconception — if your tap water has the same pH as your tank, water changes don't lower pH at all. The only way to lower pH long-term is to address KH, CO2, or use RO water. Regular water changes are for nitrate control, not pH management.

SA Municipal Water Reports Are Public

Every South African municipality publishes annual water quality reports. Nelson Mandela Bay's Blue Drop Reports include full chemistry data. Searching "[your municipality] water quality report" will usually find real pH, hardness, and chloramine data for your area.

Test Strips Are Not Reliable Enough

Colourimetric test strips are convenient but inaccurate — especially for ammonia, where they can give false negatives. For a new tank or any problem diagnosis, use liquid drop test kits (API Master Kit is the SA standard) or a calibrated digital meter.

Evaporation Concentrates Everything

As water evaporates, all dissolved minerals and nitrates become more concentrated. A tank that evaporates 10% of its volume and is topped up with untreated tap water weekly gradually accumulates hardness and pollutants. Only top up with dechlorinated water, and do regular partial water changes to reset the chemistry.
